SUMMARY

Extensive guidance for the on/offshore oil or gas industry, chemical manufacturing and associated pipeline operations. To enable duty holders to develop, review and enhance isolation standards and procedures. Also generally applicable to any industry undertaking process isolations and to mobile offshore drilling units where relevant. Examining principles and legal considerations, it advises how to isolate plant and equipment safely and how to reduce the risk of releasing hazardous substances during intrusive activities like maintenance and sampling. Includes a methodology for selecting 'baseline' standards and outlines preventive and risk reduction measures. In scoping the pertinent issues, it considers broad matters (eg work control systems or documentation) and specifics like draining or venting. With many detailed diagrams and easy-glance reference tables.

This report and the work it describes were funded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Its contents, including any opinions and/or conclusions expressed, are those of the author(s) alone and do not necessarily reflect HSE policy
