SUMMARY
The opportunity of monitoring real large scale hydrocarbon fires presented itself after the destruction of the Kuwaiti oil fields carried out by the retreating Iraqi forces. It was hoped that this source of data would increase the understanding of such fires and hence improve the ability to control, protect against and extinguish large fires.
