Obituary - Chris Savvides
04 May 2023
It is with profound sadness that we learnt of the passing of Chris Savvides, a highly respected Fire and Explosion expert who retired from BP 2 ½ years ago. Chris worked for BP’s Upstream Engineering Centre (UEC) for over 30 years and was BP’s representative on the FABIG Steering Committee for 5 years between 2016 and 2020. Chris passed away peacefully on 29th March 2023.
Following the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988, Chris contributed to the development of many of the models that are still in use today for the management of fire & explosion hazards. Chris was involved in many large-scale experimental programmes at DNV Spadeadam and was considered one of BP’s leading experts in explosion modelling. He was involved in fire & explosion modelling for nearly all BP offshore facilities to ensure the safety of the workforce.
Originally from Cyprus, Chris moved to the UK to pursue his degree and PhD. Following his retirement, he spent most of his time in his beloved Cyprus, where he was buried on 19th April 2023.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Chris's family and friends. Chris will be remembered by all of us as a highly respected and unique individual who made a significant impact in his field and in the lives of those who knew him.
