This paper considers safety issues over the life cycle of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) used in electric vehicles including their end of life disposal, potential reuse in second-life applications, recycling and unscheduled end of life. Incidents, potential failure mechanisms, risks associated with LIBs and risk management systems are described. Current regulatory and information gaps are also discussed.

This paper describes numerical and experimental studies conducted for high energy density 4.8 Ah 21700 cylindrical NMC LIBs at 100 % SOC in order to develop a viable predictive tool for simulating LIB fires, quantifying the heat release rate and temperature evolution during thermal runaway.
- Numerical study of premixed gas explosion in a 1-m channel partly filled with 18650 cell-like cylinders with experiments

This paper describes a study evaluating the prediction accuracy of the open-source CFD combustion model/solver XiFoam by comparing numerical simulations and experiments of premixed gas explosions in a 1 m explosion channel partly filled with 18650 cell-like cylinders.
