SUMMARY

This report is a compilation of worldwide experimental facilities suitable for the study of explosion hazards. Facilities suitable for the purpose of fire research are given in the Report on Work Package FL3.

The purpose is to provide means of identifying:

  • Experimental facilities with current or potential ability to carry out such studies;
  • Potential resources for conducting any necessary further investigations.

Organisations approached included:

  • Academic Institutions;
  • Contract Laboratories;
  • Corporate Laboratories;
  • Government Laboratories;
  • Technical Institutions;
  • Laboratories associated with Consulting, Designing and Contractor Organisations.

Replies were received from 47 organisations. The associated data has been reviewed and it is concluded that there are few facilities worldwide capable of carrying out large-scale explosion experiments. There are no explosion rigs of a suitable scale suitable for modelling a complete offshore module. However, a number of sites capable of performing large-scale fire tests do exist (FL3), though the nature and endurance of the fire will vary greatly.
