CONTENTS:

This FABIG Newsletter comprises the following:

  • Editorial: 'Reports from previous fire & explosion research projects now available on FABIG Website'
    G. Vannier - The Steel Construction Institute (SCI)
  • Review of the Technical Meeting which covered 'Toxic Products: Management, Mitigation and Emergency Preparedness'
    S. Pabby1, F. Aoun2, D. Roosendans3, R. Magraw4, C. Coffey5 - 1Health and Safety Executive (HSE), 2Tengizchevroil, 3Total, 4BakerRisk Europe, 5Gexcon
  • Hazards and risks related to the use of hydrogen fluoride in industry
    D. Roosendans & P. D' Hainaut - Total
This paper provides an overview of the use of hydrogen fluoride in the industry, its chemical properties, the possible health effects upon exposure and emergency response in the event of an accidental release. The paper gives recommendations for the design, inspection, maintenance and operation of hydrogen fluoride containing equipment.
  • Beirut disaster: Analysis of video recordings
    M. Johnson & P. Cronin - DNV GL
This paper describes how the video recordings of the tragic detonation of Ammonium Nitrate that occurred in Beirut, Lebanon in August 2020 can be used to estimate the characteristics of the explosion such as the shock wave speed, positive phase duration and magnitude.
  • Resistance of passive protection materials to jet fires: Numerical evaluation of thermal loads
    V. Dréan, R. Chiva & J. Visse - Efectis
This paper describes the development and validation of a numerical model of a jet-fire testing facility which can be used to extrapolate the results of jet fire tests to further assess the performance of PFP materials numerically.
  • The benefits of blind benchmarking of probabilistic Explosion Risk Analysis (ERA) studies
    P. Middha1, S. Howell1 & T. Jones2 - 1Abercus, 2RPS
This paper describes the sources of uncertainty in probabilistic ERA and proposes to set up a Joint Industry Project involving a blind probabilistic ERA comparison exercise so as to identify inconsistencies in the ERA approach across the industry and eventually facilitate the development of related guidance.
  • FABIG Webinars held in 2020
    G. Vannier - The Steel Construction Institute (SCI)
A summary of all the Lunchtime Webinars held by FABIG in 2020.
