CONTENTS:

This FABIG Newsletter comprises the following:

  • Editorial: International Process Safety Week: Statistics from 1st edition and what’s next
Guillaume Vannier - The Steel Construction Institute (SCI)
  • Large-scale experimental research of VCEs – A summary from one viewpoint
    D.M. Johnson, D. Allason, P.M. Cronin - DNV Spadeadam Research & Testing
This paper summarises the advances in knowledge of Vapour Cloud Explosions (VCEs) gained through more than 45 years of large and full-scale testing, which demonstrated the importance of congestion and confinement, showed the differences between hydrocarbons and provided data for validating predictive models for the analysis and design of industrial facilities.
  • The development and testing of a low inertia, rapid acting explosion relief panel for hydrogen applications
    M.V. Hasson1, R. Crewe2, C. Norris3, A. Davies4, M. Gilmore5, S. Lawrence3 - 1Hasson Engineering Solutions Ltd, 2DNV Spadeadam Research & Testing, 3Rhino Engineering Group Ltd, 4Rhino HySafe Ltd, 5Rhino Systems Ltd
This paper describes the engineering development of explosion relief panels for use in hydrogen applications, battery energy storage systems and related applications, which included the development of a pressure-impulse nomograph to assist designers and specifiers with system selection, as well as the full-scale explosion testing carried out validate their performance.
  • CFD modelling of methane dispersion from buried pipeline leaks: experimental validation and hazard distance estimation
    S. Mohanty, S. Brennan, V. Molkov - Hydrogen Safety Engineering and Research Centre (HySAFER), University of Ulster
This paper presents a CFD model validated against experimental data and able to accurately predict the dynamic formation and maximum extent of the flammable cloud resulting from a methane release from a buried pipeline, therefore enabling the derivation of hazard distances.
